The teaser of Ravi Udyawar's upcoming thriller MOM is exactly that - a teaser. It just piques your interest in the film but remains mum about the plot. After watching the teaser, we can only suffice that Sridevi's turns to evil ways to rescue her daughter, a storyline similar to that of Sanjay Gupta's Jazbaa two years ago.
Sridevi plays a mother once again after her last outing in Gauri Shinde's 2012 slice of life drama English Vinglish. However, the genres are poles apart as MOM is touted as a nail-biting thriller. Their characters also seem different. While she played Shashi, a homemaker in the former, she comes across as an independent woman in the latter.
But Sridevi's subtle emoting and body language, coupled with her articulate eyes, serve as just the right combination to lend the film an air of intrigue.
Also, Nawazuddin Siddiqui appears in a never-seen-before avatar, though only for a couple of seconds. While his transformation is interesting, there are no details about his character. Akshaye Khanna also makes a comeback to the thriller genre, having done praiseworthy work in Abbas-Mustan's thrillers like Race, 36 China Town and Humraaz.
The video-game like background score of the teaser seems funny at first but soon blends into the equally absurd visuals that seem like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle scattered all over the story board. The only hint given out is at the end in Sridevi's hoarse quivering voice. Her statement poses a pertinent question and we will have to wait for the release of the film to decode it to its most comprehensible context.
MOM also stars Abhimanyu Singh, Vikas Verma, Sushant Singh, Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali. Reportedly, Nawazuddin will be seen in only a cameo in the film. It is co-produced by Boney Kapoor and Sunil Manchanda among others. It is slated to release on 14 July.
