Mercury teaser: Prabhudeva-starrer promises to be a scare-fest filled with suspense and silence
With a bunch of horror movies/ thrillers hitting the Indian screens recently, it definitely seems to be the flavour of the season. It has always been cribbed about that horror, as a genre, has hardly been experimented within Indian cinema. However, the latest addition to the Indian roster of horror films is the upcoming Prabhudeva starrer Mercury, directed by Karthik Subbaraj.
So what's special in this horror film? It has all the elements to join the horror league, for one — creepy soundtrack, misty surroundings, a paranormal demon and a group of enthusiastic folks who eventually end up in a state of mortal peril. However, what Mercury offers that is new and different from other horror flicks, is silence; the film is a silent horror flick.
After Subbaraj's National Award winning-film Tamil gangster flick Jigarthanda, there are a lot of expectations surround this upcoming project. Being a silent film, the background soundscape is very sharp and clear; that is what creates the eerie aura around the film.
The film's premise is set around a misty, abandoned place that bears the sad and horrific deaths of 84 people due to mercury poisoning. Prabhudeva's character appears to be one of those dead beings. Now whether he is a ghost, zombie or an entity dangling between the realms of life and death will only be known when the film releases. But whatever it is, he does look horrific — bloodied, disfigured and chilling to the core.
The film, Mercury, has been backed by Pen Movies and is slated to release on 13 April (that happens to be a Friday, FYI).
