It was earlier reported that Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut, who share screen space in Vishal Bhardwaj's upcoming period war drama Rangoon, will share the couch on filmmaker Karan Johar's chat show Koffee with Karan Season 5. Now, it is being reported that the third member of the lead cast, Shahid Kapoor, will join the duo on the show as a special guest.

A host of media outlets, such as The Quint, International Business Times, Pinkvilla and The Indian Express have reported that Shahid will join Saif and Kangana on the show. While he does have an interesting dynamic with Saif, given that his ex Kareena Kapoor Khan is married to Saif, the elephant in the room might not even be addressed by either of them including the host.

With the entire cast on board, this will be the fourth episode this season to promote an upcoming film.

The very first episode set this tone when Shah Rukh Khan shared the couch with Alia Bhatt to promote their then-upcoming film, Gauri Shinde's slice of life drama, Dear Zindagi. Johar was a co-producer of that film so it was rather convenient to plug his favourite line, "Dear Zindagi, 25 November, in a theatre near you."

Dharma Productions or not, Johar has allowed more promotional pairings on this season than any other season.

For example, the next episode of Koffee with Karan Season 5 will feature Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt who have shared screen space in Dharma's next, Shashank Khaitan's romantic comedy, Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Dubbing it as 'the best film of the year', Johar also promoted Dangal on the show by allowing Aamir Khan to share the couch with his onscreen daughters Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh.

This is not the first season that Johar has incorporated film promotional activities on his show. In the second season, Johar welcomed good friends Shah Rukh and Farah Khan who promoted their film Om Shanti Om, alongside Deepika Padukone, on the show.

Similarly, in the third season, Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan shared the couch to promote their then-upcoming thriller No One Killed Jessica. The last season saw Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan do the same for the romantic comedy Shaadi Ke Side Effects, followed by Shahid and Sonakshi Sinha for Prabhudeva's action comedy R...Rajkumar, and Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla for Gulaab Gang.

However, this season, Johar has promoted four films. Also, there were no non-actor celebrities on the show this season with the exception of the last episode featuring Farah Khan and Sania Mirza.

His previous seasons featured not only prolific filmmakers but also non-film celebrities like Mahesh Bhupathy, Shobhaa De, Vijay Mallya, Sunita Menon and Manish Malhotra. Another breed conspicuously absent on this season are yesteryear actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Jaya Bachchan, Neetu Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Hema Malini, Randhir Kapoor and Zeenat Aman, all of whom have graced the show on multiple occasions in the past.
