Koffee with Karan season 5 Episode 1: Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan are a candid delight
.. Sure, cynics will say that they have a movie coming up (Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi, which they tried to plug at many places during the episode), but Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan on the season five premiere of Koffee with Karan were candid, funny, and quite insightful.
While talk shows with fun games has become a well-used format for celebrity interviews (thank you, Ellen), Karan Johar managed to make it unique by virtue of his relationships with these celebs. You can see the comaraderie between them. It is this familiarity that becomes the hosting ground of jokes about Alia general knowledge, Karan and SRK being together/married and Alia's alleged love life.
Here are some snippets from the show, incase you missed it:
Love life & beyond
While we found out that Alia had her first real relationship at the age of 16, we also found out that SRK would rip the lips off of any boy who attempted to kiss Suhana, who is also 16. Alia also vehemently denied dating anyone, including Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhota and Arjun Kapoor. Infact she claimed that she's taking a break from relationships.
It's all about the movies
Shah Rukh was able to reveal his funny, quirky side as well as discuss movies and cinema with as much intensity. SRK informed us that years ago he realised that he had never made a film that would be considered the best film of any generation. And so, he wants to spend the next few years attempted to make good cinema.
"I want to figure out my own cinema," he said.
Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt revealed that she is in a good place in her career and that even though she thought Sonam Kapoor's performance in Neerja (considered to be the standout female performance of the year) was great, she would be upset if she didn't win an award for her performance in Udta Punjab.
SRK said about Alia, "she's one of the finest actors of the generation. Alia is too good too soon. I don't want her to get trapped in just doing great acting without experiencing everything in Indian cinema. If you become too good too soon, you may have inhibitions being bad at times."
Impressions and Opinions
Shah Rukh Khan did a mean Arnab Goswami impression, and also read a technical manual in Shakespearean lingo. Alia pretended to a 60s Bollywood heroine while reading out a financial analysis of Brexit.
SRK also revealed that he was a big fan of Ranveer's padded look in Befikre. "Either that, or I'm a big fan."
While Alia wanted to know where Kangana goes when she's clicked with her airport looks. Shah Rukh also called Alia "demotional": A word he made up that stands for a detached but emotional. Oh, and Alia said she's love to have a "liason" with Katrina Kaif.
Rapid Fire and Pop Culture quiz
Shah Rukh won the rapid fire round with his witty answers (no doubt there) while Alia won the pop culture quiz. In one of the most wittiest moments of the show, SRK reveals he thought he was the fourth idiot to have turned down 3 Idiots and that if Salman Khan had an autobiography, it would be called, "Kal Ho Na Ho meri pichaar toh chalti rahegi".
Next week will see Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna on the Koffee couch. You can watch the full episode on Hotstar here.
Here's how Twitterati responded to the first episode (it's dominated by praise of SRK but can you blame them?):
