After Anushka Sharma and Priyanka Chopra, another leading lady is turning to production. Lady luck seems not to be smiling on Katrina Kaif as she dished out three consecutive flops in Kabir Khan's Phantom, Abhishek Kapoor's Fitoor and Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho after the resounding success of Vijay Krishna Acharya's Dhoom 3.
Now that she has only two big projects to boast of, in Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos and Ali Abbas Zafar's Tiger Zinda Hai, her venture in film production is rather timely. Mumbai Mirror reports that Kaif will soon launch her production house and may launch her two UK-based sisters Isabel and Sonam in the Hindi film industry, as reported by Mumbai Mirror.
Initially, Katrina's former boyfriend Salman Khan was planning to launch Isabel, just like he has launched a number of newcomers like Sonakshi Sinha, Zarine Khan and Pulkit Samrat. Interestingly, Khan was instrumental in Isabel bagging a Canadian film, Jean-Francois Pouliot's Dr Cabbie, as well. However, now that the actor has dropped the plan to give her the break in India, Katrina has taken the forefront and is gearing up to launch her sisters soon.
Dainik Bhaskar earlier reported that Kaif, like her former boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, was planning to turn producer with Jagga Jasoos. However, since that never happened, she may now start her production house to facilitate the debut of her sisters.
Earlier, female actors mostly turned to production after their marriage in order to serve as a trophy producer in their husbands' production houses. For example, Juhi Chawla in Red Chillies Entertainment, Malaika Arora Khan in Arbaaz Khan Productions, Dia Mirza in Born Free Entertainment and Twinkle Khanna in Hari Om Productions.
Now, Khanna is the most recent female actor to start her own production house in Mrs Funnybones Films in a trend that started from Preity Zinta opening her production house PZNZ Media. However, these are two examples of female actors who quit acting years ago.
Anushka Sharma broke that glass wall as well when she turned producer and continued to juggle it with acting in films. Priyanka Chopra followed suit with Pink Pebble Productions that is now churning out regional films, with the aid of her mother Madhu Chopra.
