Subhash Kapoor's courtroom drama Jolly LLB 2 seems to be on its way to become the third highest grosser of this year. Its release this past Friday marks the end of the honeymoon period of the Republic Day releases, Sanjay Gupta's revenge drama Kaabil and Rahul Dholakia's Raees,
As per IANS, Jolly LLB 2 raked in Rs 13.20 crore at the box office on its opening day. From a film that almost risked its release because of a Bombay High Court petition to drop the term 'LLB' from its title to crossing Rs 10 crore on its first day of release, it seems to have performed considerably well.
The word of mouth, coupled with the success engine of Akshay Kumar, seems to be the driving force behind this film at the box office. Kumar delivered three Rs 100 crore club movies last year in Sajid-Farhad's comedy ensemble Houseful 3, Raja Krishna Menon's Airlift and Tinu Suresh Menon's Rustom. Cast yet again in a de-glam role, Kumar seems to be pushing his latest film with the aid of his nuanced performance.
The film was made on budget of Rs 45 crores and it is likely to cross half of its budget on its second day. Though there is no extended weekend unlike in the case of Kaabil and Raees, Kumar's film at the box office will have to pass the Monday test sooner than the two films who have already made inroads into the Rs 100 crore club.
The last reported figures of Kaabil and Raees, on 7 February, were Rs 118.14 crore and Rs 147.46 crore respectively. However, now that they have crossed their 15-day run at the box office, their rate of progress is gradually going down. Last week, the gangster comedy Coffee with D failed at the box office, allowing Kaabil and Raees to continue their successful run.
Now, with Jolly LLB 2 making a resounding statement on its opening day, Kaabil and Raees will be forced to take the backseat.
