From the fast-paced glimpses that you get of Sophia, the protagonist of Netflix original series Girlboss, you can tell that there is no dearth of spunk and courage in her.
The trailer of the new Netflix show opens with a scene where the protagonist is bargaining for a vintage leather jacket. She finally gets her way when she promises to give the shopkeeper free business advice in exchange for a discount. He agrees, and then she says that if he knew the true worth of the jacket, he would have priced it right and made a large profit.
She goes on to use this business sense and turns it into a livelihood. She collects rare clothes, puts up pictures of them on online shopping portals and successfully gets people to bid large sums of money to buy them. "You know how people flip houses? Well, I flip clothes," she explains.
Britt Robertson is effortless as Sophia, especially when she says, "Boom! Dollar dollar bills, y'all," when she earns $600 on a jacket.
In the trailer are also people who show disdain for what she does, including her own father. Over time, buyers begin to call her a rip-off and she loses the trust of Ebay users. She decides to launch her own shopping website. In a particular moment when she is on stage celebrating the fact that all the clothes are sold out, she resembles Leonardo DiCaprio's Jordan Belfort from The Wolf of Wall Street.
What is most striking is that her attitude is a mix of devil-may-care and determination. You can tell how badly she wants to succeed from the way she hisses, "Go ahead, underestimate me, I've got it all figured out."
This show is based on Sophia Amoruso's autobiography of the same name.
Girlboss begins streaming on 21 April, 2017.
