Dangal beats Sultan: Aamir Khan's film crosses 300 cr; becomes 2016's highest grosser

Even though Aamir Khan and Salman Khan don't seem to be competing (that we know of), both their films from 2016, Dangal and Sultan were in a race of their own for two reasons. Firstly, both films had similar backgrounds: Haryana and wrestling. Secondly, both stars are known to rake in close to 300 crores per film. The competition had begun since Dangal released on 23 December 2016.

And while the Sultan official box office collection stands at 300.45 crore at the domestic box office, Dangal has officially crossed the 300 crore mark, which officially makes it the highest grossing film of 2016, according to this Times of India report. (These are the domestic box office collections.)

Both Aamir and Salman now have two films in the 300 crore category. Aamir with PK and now Dangal, and Salman with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan.

According to Indian Express, Sultan had grossed about Rs 572 crore (from domestic and international markets), while Dangal has already crossed Rs 426 crore gross (Rs 300 crore net) from domestic box office and earned Rs 158.7 crore from the international box office which takes its total worldwide earning to Rs 584.7 crore gross.

Trade pundits are already predicting that Dangal will cross Rs 400 crores at the box office in India.

Aamir Khan's next film will be Advait Chauhan's Secret Superstar, which also has Zaira Aslam, the girl who played a teenaged Geeta Phogat in Dangal. Salman Khan is currently working on Kabir Khan's Tubelight and the TV show Bigg Boss.

The only thing left to do now is a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna (you know you want to).
