Karan Johar responds to Kangana's nepotism allegations: 'Stop playing the victim card'

Last month, Kangana Ranaaut grabbed eyeballs of the entire nation when she accused filmmaker Karan Johar of being the flag-bearer of nepotism in the Hindi film industry, on his chat show Koffee with Karan Season 5. While Johar took it in his stride then, he has now responded to Ranaut’s allegations. [caption id=“attachment_3074846” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Filmmaker Karan Johar. Reuters[/caption] While speaking to film critic Anupama Chopra at the India Forum at the London School of Economics, Johar said that he was gracious enough to not run the scissors on the part of his show when Ranaut dubs him as the flag-bearer of nepotism. However, he wants to ask her if she comprehends the meaning of ’nepotism’ completely, taking a potshot on her spoken English, an act that he has also done on his show in the previous seasons.

Told my husband that I'm going to London to interview @karanjohar. Vinod said but woh Bandra mein rehta hai! It was such fun. Thanks #LIF2017 pic.twitter.com/ViOOGbCfKJ

He explained his stance by boasting of having launched a dozen filmmakers with no film family backgrounds over the years, like Tarun Mansukhani, Shakun Batra, Shashank Khaitan, Abhishek Varman and Karan Malhotra. He also added that if he launched industry kids Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in his 2012 directorial Student of the Year, then he also gave break to Siddharth Malhotra in the same film, though he did not belong to a film family. Johar steered clear of Ranaut’s charges by pointing out that he has never collaborated with his family members professionally. He also expressed his contention towards Ranaut using the term ‘movie mafia’, saying that if filmmakers like him choose not to cast her in their films, it is out of a professional choice and not any personal vendetta. “That does not make me the flag-bearer of nepotism but a man with an opinion,” he said. Also, he concluded by saying that he is exhausted seeing Ranaut play the victim or the woman card. “You cannot have a sad story at every point of time about how you have been terrified by the industry which is a ‘bad world’; leave it!”
