There have been multiple films that revolve around the infamous 'friend-zone'. Cases in point are Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ayan Mukerji's Wake Up Sid and Shakun Batra's Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu. The upcoming Half Girlfriend, directed by Mohit Suri, also plays with the same word in a different manner.
But Ajay K Pannalal's romantic comedy Behen Hogi Teri explores an area that was discovered way before 'friendzoned' came into the picture. Being 'bro-zoned' was the pre-modern adjective for a lover who had his hopes high for romantic involvement with a girl who does not reciprocate the same feelings.
Rajkummar Rao plays the bro-zoned guy in this film set in a small town locality. This film introduces a locality that still prefers to bro-zone unrequited lovers than friend-zoning them.
In a hilarious exchange, Shruti Haasan, the leading lady of the film, threatens to tie a rakhi to Rao if he continues to chase her for love. Haasan plays a headstrong small town woman whereas Rao plays that typical unrequited lover, though with a touch of simmering desperation.
Just like other small town films like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6, this film also has an ensemble cast who play members of the family and neighbourhood. While the trailer suggests that the mishmash of characters could prove to be a burden on the narrative, one would get to know that only once the film releases.
Also, Rao returns to a mainstream role probably the first time since Vikas Bahl's Queen. The film also has shades of Shashank Khaitan's Dulhania franchise as it never takes itself too seriously. Set in a small town, it also revolves around weddings and joint families.
Behen Hogi Teri also stars Gulshan Grover, Varun Sharma and Darshan Jariwala. It is slated to release on 2 June.
