Begum Jaan first look: Vidya Balan in a stunning avatar as madam of brothel
Two months ago, a picture leaked from the sets of Srijit Mukherji's upcoming period drama Begum Jaan. The still showed Gauhar Khan, who plays a prostitute in the film, massaging the back of Vidya Balan, who plays the madam of a brothel in the film set during the troubled times of the Partition.
Now, the makers have released the first look of the film that features Balan's character. Balan is known for choosing roles very wisely and this look hints at the fact that her fans can look forward to yet another National Award-winning performance from the actor.
Her outfits reflect the times and place that the film is set in. Her deep-cut three-fourth sleeves blouse is well adorned with embroidery in saffron, green and maroon. Since the story revolves around Balan and the other ladies of brothel having been forced to choose their allegiance between India and Pakistan after the Partition, the saffron and green in her blouse speaks volumes. The third colour, i.e., maroon goes hand in hand with the colour of her skirt.
She wears minimum jewelry but her eyes dazzle as dominantly as stones of emerald. They come across as both hypnotic and menacing. The hukka serves as the exclamation point of her appearance as it adds a dimension of authority to her character since indulgence in the smoking instrument had been mostly confined to men till the Partition.
Interestingly, we also saw Tabu puffing smoke from the hukka in Abhsihek Kapoor's romantic drama Fitoor last year. However, on the other side of the throne that she is sitting on lies a gun, loaded and ready to be used.
Overall, Balan comes across as a figure of authority, as suggested by her pose, who is fond of colours and vivacity, though her dark cold eyes suggest otherwise.
Begum Jaan also stars Pallavi Sharda, Ila Arun and Naseeruddin Shah. It is produced by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films. It is slated to release on 14 April.
