Amitabh Bachchan says he's not a singer; but this playlist of his songs will prove otherwise
Despite lending his vocals to some hit numbers for his Bollywood films, Amitabh Bachchan claims that he's not a singer. Just last week the actor had sung the aarti during Ganesh Chaturthi at the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai. However, after that, he said to Asian Age, “Singing is not a career option for me, primarily because it is not my domain, nor am I accomplished enough to make it one. Yes, various stages of my film career have been witness to that odd ditty, but there is nothing more to it.”
Even if he feels otherwise, his fans have always loved his baritone in various songs. Here are some of the superstar's best known songs in recent times:
'Kyun re' from TE3N
Sung with Clinton Cerejo, Bachchan's voice in the TE3N song brings out his character's pain and grief.
'Piddly si baatein' from Shamitabh
The song from Shamitabh saw Bachchan turning into a bathroom singer, rendering the whole two-and-a-half minute track while seated on a toilet! Composed by music legend Ilaiyaraaja, the song became popular for its wacky tune and quirky lyrics.
'Ekla Chalo Re' in Kahaani
Though he wasn't acting in the film, the actor still lent his voice to the Kahaani song. Originally a patriotic song written by Rabindranath Tagore, the song got a new life when Amitabh gave voice to the Bengali lyrics. Though he was criticised by some for few mispronunciations, exponents of Rabindra sangeet still praised him. Speaking to PTI, veteran Rabindra sangeet singer Pramita Mallick had said, "He is not a Bengali and so his pronunciation will be different. But he has made an honest effort and given full respect to the song."
'Mere Paa' from Paa
The song from the 2009 R Balki film Paa brings tears into many eyes. Though many would argue that the song is not very pleasing to hear, Bachchan's rendition is worth praising. Sung by him when he was 67, he had to sound like a 12-year-old Auro suffering from a disease called Progeria. Though he sounds off tune in many parts, his efforts to sound like a child are reflected all through the song.
'Main yahan tu wahan' from Baghban
For this Baghban song that Bachchan had sung with Alka Yagnik, the actor was nominated for the Best Playback Singer — Male. Another heart-rending song, Bachchan's character Raj Malhotra is depicted singing it over the phone to his wife Pooja Malhotra, played by Hema Malini, after they have been separated by their children.
