Actor Alec Baldwin's love-hate affair with the smartphone continues. First he lashed out against American Airlines on Twitter. Then a phone message he'd sent to his daughter was leaked and Baldwin's language raised everyone's eyebrows. (He called his daughter, Ireland, a "rude, thoughtless little pig".) Baldwin's latest smartphone escapade had him playing the role of the knight in shining armour -- albeit a pretty foul-mouthed one -- for his wife, Hilaria Baldwin.

The British newspaper, Daily Mail, ran an article criticising Hilaria for tweeting about making smoothies while attending actor James Gandolfini's funeral. Actually, it was a technical glitch on Twitter's part that led to the misleading time stamp on Hilaria's tweets, but before these details could be unearthed, Baldwin went on a rampage, 140 characters at a time.

Not only did he clarify that Hilaria had not used her phone during the funeral, he let loose a string of vicious, homophobic abuse directed at the article's author, George Stark. Among other things, Baldwin called Stark a "toxic Brit" and a "toxic little queen". Baldwin also threatened Stark with sodomy before disclosing he had fired his publicists and was shutting down his Twitter account (for the third time). For those interested, Salon has screenshots of his meltdown.

The Daily Mail has apologised for their article which has since been taken offline. Baldwin released a statement clarifying he is not a homophobe. "My ill-advised attack on George Stark of the Daily Mail had absolutely nothing to do with issues of anyone's sexual orientation," said Baldwin in his statement. "My anger was directed at Mr. Stark for blatantly lying and disseminating libelous information about my wife... As someone who fights against homophobia, I apologise." Hilaria's Twitter account remains active and she's used it to clarify Baldwin's point of view. When a commenter suggested Baldwin was an adult who could defend himself, Hilaria tweeted: "he stands up for me, I stand up for him. That is how marriage works. Somos un buen equipo (trans: We make a good team)."
