Aamir Khan attended the wedding ceremony of Geeta Phogat in her ancestral village near Haryana on Sunday 20 November 2016. Along with Aamir Khan, who plays Geeta's father, Mahaveer Singh Phogat in the sports biopic Dangal, the rest of the cast of the film — Sakshi Tanwar and director Nitesh Tiwari were also present at the ceremony.
Aamir Khan arrived at the wedding looking dapper in a red Haryanvi turban and half-jacket.
Dangal is the story of Mahaveer Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita Phogat, who are internationally renowned wrestlers. They have both won medals for India at the Commonwealth Games in the Gold and Silver category respectively. The film tells the story of the father and the two siblings's struggle to bring India the gold at the commonwealth games.
Aamir features as both the younger and the middle-aged version of Mahaveer Singh Phogat in the film. The actor gained 25 kilos to suit his character of the older Phogat who was a former wrestling champion himself.
NDTV reported that Aamir was eager to gift Geeta her wedding outfit, which is usually presented by the uncle of the bride, but Geeta insisted that the Khan's presence at the wedding was enough. The actor has personally supervised the buying of gifts for both the Phogats and the groom's family.
Talking about his younger co-stars, Aamir told IANS: "If I have to rate our performance in the film, I would say that these kids performed ten times better than what I did. No, I am not exaggerating anything. Once the film releases, the audience will understand. I have been working in the industry for last 25 years, but these kids are highly talented."
Child actors Suhani Bhatnagar and Zaira Wasim feature as the young Phogat girls in Dangal.
