New Delhi: The report titled Level and Pattern of Household Consumer Expenditure (MPCE) in Delhi from July 2009 to June 2010, was released by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday.

For a majority of the households – 51 percent – the monthly per capita expenditure was Rs 2,501 and above. The MPCE of 46 percent of the households was in the range of Rs 1,001-Rs 2,500. The MPCE of only 3 percent of the households was below Rs 1,000.

Not only does Delhi spend more, which according to Dikshit “signifies the prevalence of a relatively better level of living standards in Delhi compared to other states,” the Capital also earns more.

The average annual per capita income of Delhiites in 2009-2010 rose to Rs 1,16,886 from Rs 1,03,400 a year earlier (2008-09).

Not surprisingly, the largest chunk of the monthly income – 36 percent – was spent on food items. Ten percent on milk and milk products, seven percent cereals and pulses, two percent on edible oils and four percent on vegetables.

Eight percent of the non-food expenditure was on spent on fuels, six percent on clothing, nine percent on education, two percent on medical care and seven percent on rent.

Among the many interesting facts revealed by the report are that 64 percent of the residents own homes, 7 percent of the households are headed by women, 90 percent use LPG for cooking and 15.31 percent of the urban homes have internet connection.

The report is based on a sample survey conducted by the National Sample Survey between 2009 and 2010.
