Salman Khurshid should resign

Arun George

As his ministerial colleague said, Salman Khurshid being a union minister may not have indulged in a scam to the lowly tune of Rs 71 lakh. However, others who may be close to him may have. And they may still have the law minister’s confidence. To impartially probe a minister while he still occupies the seat of power defies common sense in a country like India, where there is no investigation agency that is considered impartial. Khurshid must put in his papers and await the verdict of the investigation against him. If not guilty he will continue to have the clean record that he claims and will have proven it beyond all doubt.read less read more

There’s no question of Salman Khurshid’s resignation, unless my understanding of Indian law is all wrong. As of now, there are accusations and denials, that’s all. Louise Khurshid has filed a defamation suit against TV Today, which runs the channels that broadcast the story first. The court will, no doubt, go through all the allegations made against the Khurshid’s to arrive at a decision on whether the Khurshids are blameless or guilty. In addition, the Economic Offences Wing of the Uttar Pradesh government has raided offices of the trust and is investigating the allegations. So we have a court case as well as an independent enquiry that will go into the issue to decide on who is right. When they announce the decisions, that is the moment when we know if there is guilt – or plain allegations. Till then, it’s simple. There are allegations and there are denials – and that is no ground on which to demand a resignation.read less read more
