Rahul Gandhi is not bigger than the Congress, he must listen to the party

Rahul Gandhi is not bigger than the party he is a part of. He is a general secretary of the Congress through election and though it is highly unlikely, can even be ousted from the party if need be. He has chosen to accept a responsibility and has no choice but to accept the expectations that come with it. In few parties does the situation arise that the party seeks something from its leader and is rebuffed. Responsibilities in a political party are handed over and not taken when deemed fit. The entire exercise of letting Rahul choose what he wants to be, when he wants to be it does nothing but show up the Congress’ claims of being a democratic party. As a career politician, Rahul Gandhi should do what the party seeks of him or make way for another leader who at least promises to deliver. He cannot dodge his responsibilities and though Sonia Gandhi and other leaders may give him the freedom to choose his path, Rahul Gandhi must realise he is just a major cog in a bigger machine. What will be the foremost argument for anyone who supports the motion? That it is a democratic party and Congress made Rahul Gandhi its general secretary not vice versa. For arguments’ sake, both are right. Where is the disagreement then? Well, Congress is a dynasty-run political party. Congress today stands firm because of the surname Gandhi. It is an edifying word for the Congress. Rahul is a Gandhi. He knows what lies ahead including the party. So when the party revolves around ‘Gandhi’, it has no authority to thrust anything on Rahul.
