Despite all the sound and fury over Narendra Modi, he is still an untested quantity in national politics. Given his dictatorial style of functioning and unbending approach to issues, his ability to operate with squabbling allies in a democratic fashion as prime minister is highly suspect. Judging Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's credentials for the post of prime minister on the basis of so-called secularist ideals is itself an example of partisan politics. Agreed that the 2002 riots in Gujarat will remain as a scar in India's history. But we cannot overlook the fact that Gujarat has left its bloodied past behind, marching ahead in terms of economy and growth. For a man, who is blamed for alleged inaction during the massacres, this turnaround in the arid state cannot be ignored. He is firm and decisive in administration. Modi is facing investigation for his role as executive head during the riots. If the court convicts him, Modi will be punished and he is not above law. But doesn’t take away the fact that Modi is the man who can actually lead the country from the front particularly when the economy is in shambles.read less read more
