Currently, the country’s wine exports is about Rs 25 crore. Sharma said that vineyards are increasing in the country and simultaneously the production is growing.

Speaking on the occasion, Commerce Secretary S R Rao said that Indian wine industry in in a nascent stage but is expected to grow multi-fold.

APEDA chairman Asit Tripathy said that though the world wine market is dominated by French, Italian, Spanish and American wines, Indian wines too are becoming popular in the overseas markets and also beginning to make an appearance at international food shows.

Presently, Indian wines are largely being imported by Malaysia, Japan, the UAE, Bhutan, Germany, the USA, the UK, Sri Lanka, Maldives and New Zealand. The Indian wine industry has been around for a little over four decades and is still in a nascent stage. There are about 90 wine industries, mostly located around the Pune-Nashik belt and Bangalore.

Compared to world leaders like France, Italy, Spain, the US, Argentina, Australia, China, South Africa, Germany, Chile and the UK, Indian industry is very small and largely propelled by affordable domestic prices.

Experts, however, see a huge potential in the sector for all stakeholders—from grape farmers to consumers.
