Google to bring free Wi-Fi to 400 railway stations across India

Google Fiber might finally be making in-roads to India. Indian Railways and Google have joined forces to create a network of free Wi-Fi across 400 railway stations across the country. According to reports, the service will allow users to access free Internet at high speeds for first 34 minutes and the speed will reduce after that. AFP[/caption] Code named Project Nilgiri, the first phase will see Wi-Fi hotspots at 400 stations across a span of four months. The project is still in pilot phase and relies on Google’s Fiber technology. Wi-Fi connectivity will be made available free to passengers after mobile number verification through a one-time password sent over SMS, says the IRCTC website. Indian Railways is currently providing Wi-Fi connectivity in moving trains for select routes like Rajdhani express using satellite communication technology, informs the IRCTC website. Google in phase 2 will provide Wi-Fi on board moving trains pan-India. There have been no announcements on the exact dates and timelines in which the project will be undertaken.
