Flipkart and eBay are two very popular websites when it comes to online shopping for Indians. And, now with Amazon's entry, the competition is heating up. Of course, unlike the former two sites, Amazon has limited offering of books and DVDs. The Business Standard has done an interesting experiment with the trinity to check out how they are pitched against each other.
According to the article in the newspaper, two items were bought through all the three sites-- Khaled Hosseini's book titled And The Mountains Echoed and a DVD of Ang Lee's Hollywood hit Life of Pi.
How they fared: As per the report, all three sites offered the book at different prices. Amazon’s price was Rs 370, Flipkart Rs 420 (they charge Rs 50 delivery charge for books which cost less than Rs 500) and eBay Rs 479. But, remember it’s the individual seller who decides the price and the delivery charges on eBay. And, like the other two sites, Amazon also allows you to preview the book. As far as transaction speed goes, they found that Amazon was better than Flipkart. However, unlike Flipkart, Amazon did not offer cash-on-delivery option. On eBay, the seller decides whether to give a cash-on-delivery option or not. Of course, let's not forget that their business models are different, while Amazon and eBay are marketplaces, Flipkart hold its own inventory.
While choosing to shop online, it’s always good to compare across websites for prices. If possible also read the terms and conditions of use. Remember, price should not be the only deciding parameter. The mode of payment, transaction speed, customer service, the speed of delivery along with refunds policy should be taken into account.
