The story of Appu’s family portrait that’s worth #AMillionThanks

Like all children, Appu too has wishes. Other girls wish for dolls, tea sets and pretty frocks. But Appu is different; she just wants a picture. Not a film star’s photo, or that of a singer, actor or cricketer. Appu wants something far more special than that. She wants a picture that has her father, mother and her in it.

She has not been able to get it so far because her father left home to search for a livelihood in the city, leaving his family behind. Appu misses her father dearly.

Appu’s father is not the only one who misses out on his family. Every year, millions of rural poor migrate to the cities to give their families back home a chance at a better life.

Axis Bank, through its Foundation, is changing the narrative for children like Appu across rural India. The foundation, set up in 2006, has already touched a million lives and aims to impact many more. The goal of the foundation is to help create sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.

The foundation partners with NGOs and provides them with financial, technical and capacity-development support to make positive contributions to the lives of the underprivileged and vulnerable communities. Projects supported by them have been able to empower people in rural India on various fronts, improving their financial status, giving them access to a basket of livelihood opportunities, and building capacities.

ABF’s initiatives have helped increase jobs in rural areas, thereby giving people like Appu’s father the opportunity to find employment back home. They have worked with farmers to help improve agricultural yield, restored water capacity to sustain farming and helped the underserved community in rural areas develop newer ways to earn money. These are just some of the amazing success stories created by the foundation.
