With 'Sardaar Gabbar Singh', Pawan Kalyan makes his grand entry into Bollywood

On 8 April, one of the biggest films from South India, Pawan Kalyan’s Telugu action movie Sardaar Gabbar Singh, a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster Gabbar Singh, is releasing. The film’s dubbed Hindi version will also release worldwide simultaneously.

The total screen count for both the versions put together, may touch 2000, which is huge by any yardstick. The big budget movie made at a cost of around Rs 70 Crore, is going to be released in 42 countries, the highest ever for a Telugu film globally.

Pawan Kalyan is one of the biggest stars in South India, who has a huge fan base in Andhra, Telengana and in USA. This also ensures a gargantuan opening for his masala entertainers. In fact, Pawan Kalyan is one actor who is very careful about his choice of films. Normally he does larger than life, action-hero movies where he is an agent for social change as he vanquishes the bad guys.

Jalapathy Gudeli, the Hyderabad based film critic and trade analyst, says: “Today, Pawan Kalyan is not just a leading star of Telugu films but an icon among the youth in the Telugu states. He is truly a phenomenon and his influence on the youth is tremendous. Testimony to his popularity is his rise as major political force in Andhra politics as he successfully campaigned for NDA in the 2014 general elections.

In Sardaar Gabbar Singh, there is a dialogue or a punchline about Pawan Kalyan which says - "He is not like any other person. He is born out of people's ideology.”

Sardaar Gabbar Singh is a typical masala entertainer directed by Bobby, in which Pawan will be portraying the role of Gabbar Singh, a Dirty Harry type of maverick police officer with a sense of humour. The story is set in the princely town of Rattanpur on the border of Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, to give it Hindi nativity. The film also stars Kajal Aggarwal, Sharad Kelkar and Kabir Duhan Singh. One of the highlights of a Pawan Kalyan film is his action scenes. In this film, there are spectacular action scenes shot using advanced cameras like Phantom Dolly and Hexacopter flying cameras.

Pawan Kalyan in a statement said, “Sardaar Gabbar Singh has a universal story with a sensibility that should appeal to audiences pan India. Filmmaking cannot be confined to a certain area or demographics and our film attempts a unique connect with India, especially the Hindi belt.”

Pawan Kalyan films in its dubbed avatar are already popular on Hindi movie channels. Now for the first time, Pawan’s Hindi dubbed version of Sardaar Gabbar Singh will have a simultaneous theatrical release along with the Telugu original through a major Bollywood production house like Eros International.

The success of Baahubali in Hindi, where it made more than Rs 100 Crore, is an eye opener for big budget Telugu films, as the trade feels that it has universal appeal and can cross the regional boundaries.

Sunil Lulla, managing director, Eros International, said: “With the enormous positive buzz and praise the film’s teaser promos have been receiving, we feel confident this film will have a wider appeal worldwide including with the non-Telugu speaking audiences.”
