Will they, won’t they?
Eventually, Colors had to finally telecast the last episode of Comedy Nights With Kapil on Sunday night. Until the last moment it seemed the episode would be assigned to oblivion, no thanks to the power tussle between the show’s host and the parent channel.
Finally, the episode did come on. But no one’s heart seemed to be in it. Lamentably the farewell episode would have been better off not aired. The jokes were lame, more so than usual. Navjot Singh Sidhu looked distinctly out of sorts and sulky, as though he was not sure which way he should go: Stay on, or move on with Kapil.
Creatively, Kapil had already moved on. The final episode was a mere formality quickly gotten out of the way. Nothing special was done as a send-off. Akshay Kumar who came on the show as a guest tried to liven proceedings with his unflagging gusto. But it was a losing battle. A pall of gloom hovered over the proceedings.
The furniture on the set that generally looks so bright and inviting, was shrouded in white. Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Ali Asgar and Kiku Sharda struggled with their limp lines. For all practical purposes, Kapil’s character Bittu Sharma and his family had already moved out of Comedy Nights. The spirit was gone. The flesh remained.
Here is what the farewell episode of Comedy Nights With Kapil should have been. It should have re-lived the most memorable moments from the three of years of its existence. The channel should have temporarily forgotten its differences with Kapil Sharma. There should have been a decent send-off to this game-changing comedy show.
It deserved a befitting goodbye. But unfortunately, we got none of that we have to sadly make do with the dollop of memories gathered over the years. Thank you for the laughs, Kapil and team.
