Ae Dil Hai Mushkil had a long, arduous and controversy-filled journey to the theatres, but filmmaker Karan Johar is already thinking about his next project.
While not too many details have emerged at this point, reports indicate that Johar and his company Dharma Productions have on the anvil, the official Hindi remake of this year's runaway Marathi cinema hit, Sairat.
Sairat, directed by Nagraj Manjukle, told the love story set against the backdrop of caste hierarchy in a small Maharashtrian town.
Starring newcomers Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar in the lead roles of star-crossed lovers Archi and Parshya, Sairat went on to win critical acclaim and become one of the rare Marathi films to enter the Rs 100-crore club (it was made at less than half the price).
News of a possible Hindi remake — one spearheaded by Dharma — has therefore generated considerable interest.
It isn't clear at this point if Karan Johar will be directing the Sairat remake himself, or merely produce it under his Dharma banner.
Reports state that Sairat's original producers (Nittin Keni, Nikhil Sane) will be the financial backers for the Hindi remake as well.
An official confirmation is now awaited from Karan Johar and Dharma, or the original Sairat team.
In June this year, Karan Johar had tweeted praise for the Nagraj Manjule-directed film, saying: "Still reeling from the tremendous impact of Sairat... saw it last night and woke up with a heavy heart and so much respect for the film..."
Meanwhile, DNA has now reported that Jahnvi Kapoor, Sridevi's elder daughter, is being considered for the role of Archi. While there were rumours of Jahnvi making her debut in Student of the Year 2, that news has now been shelved.
