Priyanka Chopra's song 'Baba' from Marathi film Ventilator is a tribute to all fathers

Priyanka Chopra is all set to venture into Marathi cinema, not only as a producer but also as a vocalist. She has released a promotional song, 'Baba', that she has sung for her maiden Marathi production Ventilator starring Ashutosh Gowariker.

Her discography in English is well-known, owing to chartbusters like 'In My City' and 'Exotic'. She has also lent her voice to Hindi songs, her last one being the title track of Dil Dhadakne Do. However, not many know that 'Baba' is not her first foray into regional music.

She lent her vocals to a Tamil song, 'Ullathai Killathe', from the 2002 film Thamizhan. After 14 years, she has once again turned to regional music, this time Marathi.

Her song is an ode to all fathers and resonates the theme of her film Ventilator, a comedy drama which has a father-son relationship as one of its central narratives. Since the film is made in memory of her late father Dr Ashok Chopra, the song also comes across as a tribute by "Daddy’s Little Girl".

The song is penned by Manoj Yadav who beautifully describes a daughter’s longing for her father and incorporates a fine blend of helplessness and emotional strength into his words. Rohan Rohan backs the lyrics with music that is easy on the ear. He uses musical instruments like guitars, flute and violin which leave a lasting impression once you are long done listening to the song.

The music video starts with Priyanka struggling to pick up the Marathi lyrics. However, by the end of the song, she does complete justice to the lyrics with commendable diction and a heartfelt rendition. It is a pleasant surprise to see her push the envelope, not only with the language but also with the genre of music.

Ventilator releases in some territories on 4 November.
