Filmmaker Malik Ram’s Tamil film Naruda DONORuda based on sperm donation is everything that its Bollywood counterpart Vicky Donor was not – dull, drab and dragged.
The film revolves around Vicky, played by Sumanth Shetty, a carefree young man who is approached by Dr Anjaneyulu, played by Tanikella Bharani, to contribute to the latter’s infertility clinic as a sperm donor. Initially reluctant, Vicky gives in to Dr. Anjaneyulu’s repeated requests only to learn about the high monetary returns that he can reap through the job.
However, once he falls in love with Aashima Roy, played by Pallavi Subhash, and marries her, his stint as a sperm donor starts encountering multiple roadblocks. The rest of the story revolves around how he manages to continue with his job and his efforts towards reconciliation with his wife.
The film comes across as an exact replica of Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor from 2012, starring Ayushman Khurana, Yami Guatam and Annu Kapoor. But going by the reviews, it lags far behind in its execution.
Greatandhra.com gives the film a rating of 2/5 stars and says, “Despite good concept, the movie fails on all fronts as the remake is treated pathetically. Overall, the team has remained faithful to the original content but has failed to bring the same verve here. It turns out to be dull vithanam and the seed never blooms at any moment.”
123Telugu.com gives it 2.75/5 and says, “The narration is quite disappointing as the film suffers heavily from lack of emotions and is strictly for adults only. If you completely forget the original and get along with the bold content of the film, you can give this film a shot for Tanikella Bharani and his hilarious act.”
The Indian Express gives the film 2.5/5 stars and says, “If you have watched Vicky Donor, which felt seamless with an engrossing flow of narration, this version would make you conscious about the missing blocks. Replete with crass euphemism and innuendos, many dialogues in the story leave you with that awkward and ‘should’ve-been-more-careful’ grin.”
