Ever since its trailer was released in the month of June, Mirzya — Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's film which marks the Bollywood debut of Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher — has been garnering a lot of attention.
The chemistry between the young actors, the earthy and rustic tone of the visuals, the breathtaking cinematography have all made this tale of star-crossed lovers one that's eagerly awaited by cinephiles.
What also triggered a lot of interest was the snippet of the beautiful song one could hear in the background of the trailer.
Now, the makers of Mirzya have released the full title track, and it's a gorgeous fulfilling of the glimmering of promise one heard in the trailer.
This is a folksy number that extols the love of Mirza and Sahiba, and several more visuals from the film than the trailer had. The images cut from the scenes depicting the epic of Mirza-Sahiba (his skill with archery and riding a horse) to the present day, where we see Harshvardhan's character as a polo player. There's also a flashback to Harshvardhan and Saiyami's characters' childhood, when their bond is first forged.
The 'Mirzya' song gets the full force of Daler Mehndi, Sain Zahoor, Akhtar Chinnal and the Nooran Sisters' vocals, and Shankar Mahadevan joins in for the chorus, along with The Salvation Singers, Nikita Deshpande and Sapna Pathak. Mahadevan, of course, has composed the music for the film, along with Loy Mendonsa and Ehsaan Noorani. The sound is refreshingly different from their previous work, and very authentic.
The lyrics by Gulzar are masterful.
'Mirzya', the song, is a wonderful introduction to the soul of Mirzya, the film. It is rooted in the place and time the story has attempted to capture, and lends it an evocative flavour that will linger long after the visuals have faded from before your eyes.
