Sonam Kapoor steps out of her comfort zone as her next film Neerja, is quite different from her previous commercial potboiler, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Directed by Ram Madhvani, the film is based on a true life story of the Pan Am hijacking in 1986. The film weighs heavy on Sonam’s shoulders as she plays Neerja Bhanot, the 23-year-old air hostess who saved lives of around 300 hijacked passengers on board, while losing her own life in the process.

“First and foremost the responsibility is towards her parents because they gave us permission to make this film. All they wanted was to have her name, her memory stay alive in everyone’s mind. Secondly, the film stand for the memory of what Neerja Bhanot faught for. She stood for certain principles and sense of right and wrong on duty. We will also be responsible for a national hero; an unsung hero, who has been almost forgotten in last 30 years,” Sonam Kapoor told Rajeev Masand.

Sonam feels that it’s the first time she had an opportunity to explore herself.

“You can only give as much as has been asked of you. If you are given the opportunity, you can use and exploit it, but when you are not, there's not much you can do. So, at the end of the day, when somebody gives you that opportunity it’s up to you to satisfy the person who is giving you the opportunity. What other people think doesn’t matter,” said Sonam.

Weeks back, Airlift, which is also based on a rescue mission, has released to severe criticism of being factually inaccurate as very successful government operation was portrayed as the success story of one man.

When asked if their film has been cautious enough to avoid such unpleasant situations, Madhvani, who was also being interviewed along with Sonam, said, “When you see the film you will see the approach is as honest as possible. Of course we must research; the research is a very basic thing behind what we stand for.”
