The adult comedy Great Grand Masti, that released on Friday, 15 July, seems to have had a poor impact on the box office on its first day.
Starring Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Deshmukh in lead roles, the film is being screened only at 1,700 screens across India.
Reports suggest that the film made, on an average, between Rs 4- 7 crore on its opening day.
The website JustBollywood.com pegs the opening day collection for the movie at a meager Rs 5 crore, while TollyTrendz.in pegs it even lower at 4 crore, with 3 crore coming in from domestic ticket sales and 1 crore from overseas.
However TheReporterTimes.com says the film has managed to rake in Rs 6.8 crore on the first day.
In comparison, Masti, the first film of the series, that had released way back in 2004, had garnered Rs 2 crore on its first day, while Grand Masti brought in Rs 12.5 crore. In fact, Grand Masti has the distinction of being the first adult comedy in India to cross the Rs 100-crore mark, which it did in 23 days.
The reviews for the film have been extremely critical and it has been thrashed for featuring crass and clichéd jokes.
Great Grand Masti is also facing stiff competition from Salman- starrer Sultan, that is running at the same time in theatres. Sultan had raked in Rs 34-36 crore on its opening day, and is going strong at Rs 200+ crore in collections.
Even other adult comedies that released this year have not done well. Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 managed to garner only Rs 8.15 crore, while Mastizaade made Rs 5.59 crore.
Weeks prior to its release, the film was leaked online and due to this the release date was advanced by a week.
