It was Comedy Nights’ Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover who tried to generate laughter at the Star Guilds awards telecast on Sony Entertainment on Friday evening.
But the actual laughter , totally unintentional, came from winner Nawazuddin Siddiqui who in thank you speech for—no ,it wasn’t for a comic performance-- Best Actor In A Supporting Role said, “I want to to thanks(sic.)…”
Thanks God for that thanks.
Now the question to be asked is, why do actors think it below their dignity to speak in Hnidi at awards function? If you are not fluent in English why make a fool of yourself with millions watching you?Admittedly, an awards function in today’s day and age is a circus. But Nawaz needn’t be the clown.
He wasn’t the only one making a fool of himself at the Star Guilds awards. It was an evening when many made a mockery of cinema. Every actor was made to endorse a brand of anti-virus on camera. Since when have awards’ sponsors become so intrusive? Are we heading towards an anarchy at awards functions where actors would hold samples of brands and dance on stage?
No wonder the star-attendance that evening was thinner than Priyanka Chopra’s waste-line. The only one who did not get an award and still attended was Sonakshi Sinha. God bless her spirit of sportsmanship, although the less said about her performance the better.
Why do stars think a few jiggles and thrusts on stage qualifies them for awards? On Friday evening the only actors who put in any kind of effort in their dancing were Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
Sonakshi was busy teasing Ranveer Singh on stage about ‘Deepu’, that’s Deepika Padukone for you and me.
To create a TRP moment Ranveer came to collect the best actress award on behalf of Deepika. He blushed coyly, smiled mysteriously. Funny, how stars create their own inhouse drama for TRPs and then blame the paparazzi for hounding them.
The Star Guild awards displayed a disturbing tendency to bend the rules of decorum to win friends and influence TRPs. At one point we could clearly see Sanjay Leela Bhansali (reacting to Kapil and Anil’s banter) and Priyanka Chopra (reacting to the camera zooming in on her when Akshay Kumar was dancing on stage) getting annoyed with the insistent attention of the cameras and the anchors who roamed the audience in search of some moments of entertainment. Alas, in vain.
It was disturbing to see Anil Kapoor co-hosting the show with Kapil Sharma. At this stage of his career Anil doesn’t need to make ‘Jhakaas’ jokes before a live audience. Even Kapil Sharma no longer calls himself a stand-up comedian.
The awards were funnier than anything the winners did, said or expressed that evening. What we need is some ‘Quick-Heal’ anti-virus that could stem the tide of trashy TRP tactics at awards functions.
