Bollywood likes to make love stories, and every subsequent love story claims to be different. This is an industry that has a love story like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya which is, let's face it, the new generation's DDLJ, and we also have love stories like Fan, which is more psychological.
Aditya Chopra's next directorial, Befikre, is also supposed to be "different" and "unlike anything he's made before" (or so claims Ranveer Singh, the film's male lead).
The multiple posters that were revealed before the film's trailer made it seem like a film about two wild, young people who loved to kiss. Coming from a director who actually made DDLJ, this was quite the tangent.
The Befikre trailer is 2-odd minutes of an extension of all the posters we've seen so far. Both the leads, Vaani Kapoor (who plays Shyra) and Ranveer Singh (who plays Dharam) are shown to be carefree and uninhibited.
The markers are there; she has red hair, he slaps a cop for a date with her, they have multiple one-night-stands (and neither are, obviously, looking for something serious), there's a lot of alcohol and dancing and canoodling involved.
And that's about it. We don't get to see beyond the one-liner of the film that we've known about all along. This fact is simultaneously good and bad. At a time of over-information and trailers that pretty much reveal the entire film in 3 minutes, this is a good depature and keeps the curiously factor high.
However, after close to seven posters, we were waiting to see something else.
The natural question to ask is, what happens after the dust settles? Befikre reminds you of films like Friends With Benefits and No Strings Attached, and even in those films the couples eventually fall in love. Given this is a Yash Raj film, it is safe to say that these two will fall in love. And if they don't, we'll be mighty impressed.
Bollywood has never had a film where the lead pair doesn't fall in love. That is an interesting concept to explore because even in real life, we have so many relationships/flings that don't necessarily end up in love/marriage. Befikre will be the first film in a long time to break the "love" spell.
Right now, the questions are piling up, but that's a job well done on a trailer's part. Ranveer and Vaani have great chemistry, and a good-looking film always goes a long way.
The Befikre trailer was showcased at a ceremony held near the Eiffel Tower in Paris in the presence of the city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo.
The film releases on 9 December. Watch the trailer here:
