Anil Kapoor as a supporting actor in Dil Dhadakne Do? The Filmfare nominations don't add up

Among all the popular awards of this land, the Filmfare is the premium product. So it is with some curiosity that one waits to see their nominations as much as their winners.

The nominations for the 61st Filmfare awards are out. And they display a certain amount of discrepancy, specially in the category that is designated rather derogatorily as ‘Supporting’.

To be honest, the category needs to be scrapped. To call an actor ‘supporting’ is as outdated as to call them ‘character actors’. All actors regardless of the length of their roles support each other. It’s as simple as that.

Coming to the nominations, we have five fine actors in the Best Supporting Actor Male category. But how is Anil Kapoor a ‘supporting’ actor in Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhakane Do? And if he is a ‘supporting’ actor who is the lead actor of the film? Anil and Ranveer Singh, who plays the other male protagonist, sparred sportingly over the issue of who supported whom in the film at a recent awards function.

But, behind their facetious laughter was a grim question that hovers over all popular awards. Why insult actors like Anil Kapoor by calling them ‘supporting actors’? Even if we look at the credit titles of Dil Dhadakne Do his name appears before anyone else.

On to the Best Actor in a supporting role, female, we have Tabu in Drishyam and Priyanka Chopra in Bajirao Mastani. Even the directors of these two films have to agree that the actresses do not play supporting roles. In fact, Drishyam director Nishikant Kamat spoke about how he tailored Tabu’s part as that of a male-hero replete with a spectacular slow-motion entry. But did it make a difference?

As for Priyanka in Bajirao Mastani, she is in in many ways the central character of the film. We see the Bajirao-Mastani romance from her point of view. She is the pivot on which the whole plot unravels. So it's a tad unclear how she is a supporting actress.

Unless the idea is to cram in as many stars in any number of categories to ensure their participation, the ‘supporting’ stance just doesn’t work.

Make note, Filmfare.
