Avinash Das's upcoming film Anaarkali of Aarah has faced the brunt of the evil of piracy. Unlike Abhishek Kapoor's Udta Punjab from last year, the fortunate part is that the film has not been leaked on YouTube in its entirety. Instead, three scenes that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had reportedly asked the makers to chop off have made it to the public domain.
Anaarkali of Aarah revolves around a dancer from a small town in Bihar who holds immense self respect in spite of being objectified every day. The Indian Express reports that the three leaked scenes include a shot in which actor Sanjay Mishra gropes the breast of Swara Bhaskar, who plays the titular character in the film. One can guess that it is the same scene which, as per the trailer, proves as the inflexion point of the narrative.
India.com reports that another scene which got leaked is the one involving Bhaskar and Pankaj Tripathi which has the line, 'Pehle kaam, fir daam', thus hinting at prostitution. The third scene features Bhaskar's back.
All the three contentious scenes had been ordered to be deleted from the film by the CBFC who deemed them unfit for public consumption. However, now the purpose of that order has been defeated since the three leaked scenes have somehow made their way to YouTube.
Hindustan Times quotes Das as saying, "It is sad. I now fear the entire film might be leaked online before the release. If the censor copy of Udta Punjab could be leaked, the threat looms large for my movie as well. I had no clue about this. I got to know only when you told me. Let me see what can be done."
Now, co-producer Sandiip Kapur has clarified the air by stating that only one out of the three scenes had been censored so the onus of the leak is not on the CBFC. His co-producer Priya Kapur and he have filed a police complaint as they suspect a senior member of their team to be the reason behind the leak.
"These (scenes) have been on media for at least three days. This act is criminal in intent and aimed at sabotaging the film and ensuring that the producer loses the investment of Rs 6 crore made on this film," read the police complaint. Kapur has also asked YouTube to take down the leaked scenes, as per inputs by IANS.
Anaarkali of Aarah is slated to release on 24 March.
